International Business and Human Rights Expert Speaks at College of Law

March 8, 2017 | By Mackenzie Dilbeck, Director of Communications
The Oklahoma International Law Society and Professor Evelyn Aswad recently hosted Michael Samway, a former vice president and deputy general counsel at Yahoo! who also led the international legal team and founded Yahoo!’s Business & Human Rights Program. He spoke to more than 50 OILS members about his firsthand experience involving the evolution of business, human rights, and the internet. Mr. Samway is also a founder of the Global Network Initiative (GNI), a multi-stakeholder initiative that strives to promote respect for international human rights law protections for freedom of expression and privacy. The GNI is comprised of companies such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Yahoo! as well as human rights groups, responsible investors, and academics.

"In a world in which what to do about fake news, extremist content, and hate speech online dominate the news, it was great to have one of the leading thinkers in this space at the College of Law to share his experiences," said OILS President Brooke Hamilton.
