About
Professor DeWalt is the Director of Legal Writing and a Professor of Legal Writing at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. She teaches first-year and upper-level courses in legal writing, oral advocacy, and legal foundations. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she coaches several competitive skills teams, including those for the ABA Negotiation Competition, ABA Mediation Competition, South Texas Energy Law Negotiation Competition, and the California Lawyer Sports & Entertainment Law Negotiation Competition. For three years, she also served as the national problem writer for the ABA Negotiation Competition. Professor DeWalt is an active member of both the Legal Writing Institute and the Association of Legal Writing Directors and regularly presents at legal writing conferences across the country. Additionally, she serves as the faculty advisor for the Organization for the Advancement of Women in Law (OAWL).
Professor DeWalt joined the OU Law faculty in 2012 after practicing as an associate attorney at Gungoll, Jackson, Collins, Box & Devoll, P.C. in Enid, Oklahoma. Her private practice focused on litigation in oil and gas law, construction law, commercial law, negligence, contract disputes, and property disputes. During this time, she was recognized as the Outstanding Young Lawyer by the Garfield County Bar Association.
She earned her Juris Doctor with Honors from the University of Oklahoma, where she served as a Note Editor for the Oklahoma Law Review and was named a member of the Order of the Coif. She has also served on the Board of Editors for the Oklahoma Bar Journal and as a Director for the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. Additionally, she was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Leadership Academy and the Luther Bohanan American Inn of Court.
