University of Oklahoma College of Law

The College of Law has adopted the following standards to ensure a rigorous program of legal education that prepares our students, upon graduation, for admission to the bar and for effective, ethical, and responsible participation as members of the legal profession.

1. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of substantive and procedural law.

This may include, for example:

a. Identifying and articulating legal issues arising in foundational and specialized areas of substantive and procedural law.

b. Applying core legal concepts in areas of substantive and procedural law.

2. Students will demonstrate proficiency in legal analysis and reasoning, legal research, problem solving, and written and oral communication in the legal context.

This may include, for example:

a. Locating and synthesizing primary and secondary sources relevant to the legal issue at hand.

b. Effectively communicating objective legal analysis and persuasive legal arguments in oral and written contexts, such as by drafting documents that objectively analyze a legal problem, that are designed to persuade, and that create legal rights and obligations.

3. Students will demonstrate understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities to clients and the legal system.

This may include, for example:

a. Applying ethical principles of the profession, including the Rules of Professional Responsibility.

b. Assessing the normative dimensions of these rules and principles.

4. Students will demonstrate other professional skills needed for competent and ethical participation as a member of the legal profession.

This may include, for example:

a. Practice engaging in lawyering tasks in real-world or simulated settings.

b. Evaluate one’s own performance on legal tasks for the purpose of continuous improvement.
