The University of Oklahoma College of Law recently gathered alumni, students, colleagues, and friends to celebrate the remarkable career of Dean Emeritus Andrew M. Coats, a leader whose impact continues to shape the College, the legal profession, and the state of Oklahoma.
The evening brought together voices from across Dean Coats’s life and career. Dean Anna Carpenter reflected on the steady, thoughtful leadership that defined his tenure and the lasting influence he leaves behind at OU Law.
“His legacy is not just what he built,” Dean Carpenter said. “It is how he built it, with care, conviction, and a constant eye toward those who would come after him.”
University of Oklahoma President Joseph Harroz Jr. spoke to Dean Coats’s transformational role in elevating the College of Law and guiding it through a pivotal era in its history and the impact of Dean Coats on him as a mentor.
“Andy Coats is one of my heroes. It’s hard to overstate what Andy Coats means to this College,” President Harroz said. “His leadership didn’t just stabilize OU Law. It set it on a path that continues to define us today.”
Judge Larry Joplin offered a deeply personal perspective, sharing stories that captured Dean Coats’s lifelong commitment to mentorship, friendship, and kindness.
“When I first met him, I wanted to be like him,” Judge Joplin said. “What I got instead was something better. I got to be his friend.”
In his own remarks, Dean Coats reflected with humor and humility on a career that spanned public service, private practice, and decades of teaching. Looking out at the audience of former students, colleagues, and friends, he expressed gratitude for the community that shaped his journey.
“To come and be here with me, as I celebrate my swan song, touches my heart,” Dean Coats said. “Maybe we've been able to get a few good things done here.”
Together, the evening’s reflections painted a portrait of a leader who not only advanced institutions, but shaped generations of students, lawyers, and public servants. Dean Coats’s legacy endures in the people and community that continue to carry forward his commitment to excellence, integrity, and service.
